Uganda Feed the Future- WATER AND FOOD SYSTEMS ACTIVITY (FTF WFSA) - Contracts & Grants Manager, Grants Officer (2024)
The USAID Uganda Feed the Future Water and Food Systems Activity (FTF WFSA) is a five year activity (2023-2028) that aims to inclusively and equitably improve food and water security in the Kyoga Basin in northeastern Uganda, specifically three watersheds – Lokok, Awoja, and Lokere, by empowering individuals and communities to mitigate and adapt to shocks and stressors in order to improve livelihoods, maintain nutrition and health wellbeing, address drivers of conflict, and reduce reliance on humanitarian assistance. This area is home to nomadic pastoralists whose livelihoods are at risk due to violent cattle raiding and the effects of climate change (drought and flooding). This part of Uganda also suffers from fragmented markets, chronic underinvestment in public services, and a lack of private sector investment. This Activity is aligned with the Water and Development II (WADI II) scope to access critical technical services in support of the U.S. Government’s Global Water Strategy, Global Food Security and Strategy Refresh, Agency Climate Strategy, and the President’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience; and is a cornerstone of the USAID Uganda (2022) Country Development Cooperation Strategy Development Objective (DO) 2, Resilient Growth Enhanced. The activity aims therefore aims to achieve results under the following development objectives:
Improve water supply and integrated water resource management.
Increase equitable access to sanitation and hygiene services for households and schools.
Improved agriculture-based livelihoods.
Increased consumption of nutritious foods among women and children.
Expanded access to financial resources for women, men, youth, indigenous people, and marginalized groups.
Improve local capacity to manage shocks and stressors.
FtF WFSA will enhance market systems, strengthen relevant institutions, expand access to climate-resilient services, and—in two of the most vulnerable of the 21 districts covered by the activity—employ “graduation” approaches to assist the ultra-poor. These initiatives will incorporate conflict sensitivity, local leadership, climate change adaptation, and approaches inclusive of women, youth, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and indigenous groups.

The overall objective of this strategy is to improve the flow of food security and nutrition-related policies and information systems to decision makers and funding institutions. It is also meant to avoid contradictions and overlapping and address major policy gaps, if there are any.
Some of these Uganda water crisis solutions include investing in quality handwashing and water infrastructure for all parts of the country and committing to providing hygiene education, which we will discuss more below.
The Water and Environment Sector of Uganda has recently developed a Strategic Sector Investment Plan (SSIP) to guide annual investments in the sector out to year 2030. In order to meet the sector's targets across 24 indicators measuring the key activities of the sector, including U.N.
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has also released new poverty rates using a revised poverty line. According to the revised line, the national poverty rate in 2019/20 was about 30 percent, being closer to but still lower than the international poverty rate of about 42 percent.
The fact that most Ugandans depend on agriculture as a main source of income makes them highly vulnerable to food insecurity as the sector is plagued by challenges such as climatic uncertainties, recurrent droughts, and the scourge of diseases and pests.
In Uganda, the greatest factors contributing to food borne illnesses relate to low levels of awareness and poor practices in thehandling of food during production, processing, storage, transportation, and retailing.
It would be a crime not to eat Uganda's fruit and veg, as they are grown locally, guaranteed to be organic, and free of pesticides. Most hotels and lodges make sure to wash the fruits and vegetables in clean water, they know your stomach would be sensitive to anything else, and they don't want guests falling ill.
More than 60% of Ugandan households depend on rain-fed subsistence farming to sustain their food supply. As the climate and its associated rainfall have become more unpredictable, such families have become increasingly vulnerable to climate change.
